Power Electronic Industry Analysis Year Ending March 2024

The Saga of 23-24 & Beyond

The year 2023-2024 for the mixed year of Power Electronic Industry. Some companies were happy while other are not so.  Overall, the  industry grew by 7.52%

Revenue-wise:

Industry grew by 547.09 Crore to net revenues of nearly 7822.22 a growth by 7.52%. Of this nearly 100 crore (estimated) is by secondary sales  to OEMs.

Since the industry is scattered with over 200 unorganized players it is difficult to pin point the actual sales to end-users, all this secondary sales does not include batteries and are purely static inverter sales for B2B trade & not to end users.

This industry has not grown as we estimated. This can be attributed to freebies promised in various state elections by various political parties. It started from one & was picked up by others, forcing even the party in power to announce freebies. This is sad that people succumb to such freebie tactics & elect governments which fail to deliver on the development front.

Softdisk believes that Elections Commission of India should come up with strong guidelines and no parties should be allowed to publicize such freebies in their elections manifestos and campaigns. Stringent punishments  should be enforced on such parties for promoting such freebies. All this is must for a overall development of our nation.

In July we have predicted for 2024-25  that  industry is anticipated to grow by 10% as the first quarter was good & growing as the Central Govt. placed many orders, however as per our revised estimate growth will be somewhere around 7.4% by the end of March 2024-25. The dip is primarily due to lack of governments orders.

There are literally no state department order from certain states. Code of conduct imposed  for Central Elections and many state polls added to the dip in the state government orders. Many state are in line for elections in upcoming months as such we may not see a major surge in government orders. Companies need to focus on other vertical.

We are sure the figure which we have arrived at i.e., the total industry revenue of INR 7822.22 CR netted in the fiscal 2023-2024 will be crossed in the 2024-2025 fiscal as overall the country’s economy is growing at over 7.0%.

A few companies didn't do as expected due to some internal regions, overall the trends has been positive, the customer has become highly quality & price conscious.

Those doing customized deployment were short of orders.

Volume-wise:

Industry sales registered and estimated growth being over 7.9 %. The growth remained almost the same as the previous year with a slight dip of 0.58% over pervious year growth.

Three Phase Online UPS sales has picked up. Online sales account for nearly 94.7%. Contributing a significant increase in revenue. There is nearly 81% increase in sales of 5kVA to 60kVA UPSs, more growth in 3 phase UPS is visible. However sales of single phase UPS remains limited to select few companies who are doing good business.

Offline & line interactive UPS show a drop in growth in 7% in volume terms and not have not been a significant contributor in revenue terms, it is increasingly becoming a low margin a  high volume game. In revenue terms they contributed nearly 1.25% to the total industry revenue.

Of the total revenue of 7822.22 crores, Online UPSs accounted for 95.2% while offline & line interactive UPS showed a drop in growth & accounted for 3.0% while the SPCUs accounted for 1.8% SPCUs & Line Interactive UPSs have not been a significant contributor in increase of total industry revenue. It increasingly becoming a low margin a high volume game of line innteractive UPSs. Modular UPSs are picking up fast in especially in the ITES market & many Indian UPS manufacturers have also ventured in to this space.

SD FINDINGS

Softdisk went about finding the state of the industry and also how deep they were influenced as India continues to establish itself as the fastest growing economy in the world.

Projects have been coming up in almost all areas and the demands continues to boost, with Atma Nirbhar Bharat Campaign.  With start-ups coming up in large numbers with over1500 becoming UNICORN in 2023-24. This has increased the demand for having pure continuous power. Overall, this is putting expansion plans on a fast track. However, things will further improve in the coming years with government taking lots of measures for easing FDI and itself investing a lot on infrastructure and defense corridors. “Make in India” initiative is also paying rich dividend.

Growth for big IT, ITES, Hyper-scale Data Center, Big Data computing & India being the largest UPI user base has given Telecom segment a very big boost making it increase its tower infrastructure. India has its own 5G infrastructure &  NAVIK positioning systems already in use for defense purpose. This has kept the mid segment UPS market spirts high. A small data center with power requirement upto 30kVA and mid sized  (40 to 120KV) rating are also going as we had analyzed. Vertical wise bifurcation for year ending March 2025 is provided in the table above.

Softdisk believes that more and more people are moving towards Solar. Some have even manufactured and installed Grid Sharing Solar UPS, with hybrid facility.

Amongst the UPS major, Vertiv-Liebert with 17% share leads followed by

APC-Schneider 15%, Legrand Numeric 13%, Fuji Electric 12%, Hitachi 7%,

AVO 4%,  PowerOne 3% Eaton 2%, Socomec 2% & Techser 2%, and , While others (Including Indian biggies like  Hykon, Uniline etc.) account for rest.

Softdisk now predicts a growth nearly 7.40 %  percent  that the total industry revenue will touch INR 8100 crore approx by March, 2025. We talked to Industry Captains trying to know what the industry leaders thought of the future ahead. Many had little or no doubt to what Softdisk has predicted earlier and continued to have faith on Softdisk analysis, more so the decision making ability it has become major  tool  to the clients.   Softdisk remains committed for transparent reporting, in-depth analysis & as always throwing up forecast & estimates which you can  Rely Upon For Sure.

Softdisk found in its nation wide survey that the Power Electronics Industry grew by  547.09 Crore to net revenues of nearly 7822.22 a growth by 7.52%. In July we have predicted that industry is anticipated to grow by nearly 10% as the first quarter was good & the previous quarter slowed because of Central Elections, their was optimism in the amongst the people. was good. Govt. had placed many orders in the Feb of  fiscal 2023-24 which were executed in the first two months of first quarter of fiscal 2024-25.

Switching AVO believes that the growth for the next financial year may be around 8-9%, with the primary reason being the time lost due to the General Elections. Mr. Rabindra Agarwal, MD of AVO, expresses that they are already on track with their in-house manufacturing and have set up the necessary resources to contribute to the Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative.

This has provided AVO with a distinct advantage, allowing the company to effectively meet the needs of the government and banking sectors to a significant extent, laments Mr. Rabindra Agarwal. A substantial amount of background work is being carried out on the technical side, with strong support from our management. I am personally optimistic about AVO's increased market share in the 3/3 segment in the months and years ahead.

Demand for three-phase UPS systems has been on the rise, and this trend is anticipated to continue due to the expansion of the manufacturing, healthcare, data center, and other sectors. AVO has been addressing its customers' three-phase requirements and aims to seize this opportunity to enhance its presence and business in this area.

Promoting rooftop solar plants is a viable alternative that helps preserve green cover and reduces forced migration. Generating power for self-consumption through rooftop solar installations alleviates stress on the grid and lowers power costs for consumers. As the cost of solar systems decreases, the growth of solar rooftops paired with lithium battery systems will become a significant growth area that benefits the environment he adds.

As per Microtek International, the power backup industry, whether it's home UPS, UPS for computers, or online UPS for critical applications has seen steady and continuous growth. With the government's push to provide power to every corner of India, the demand for electricity has also risen, increasing the need for more stable and uninterrupted power. The growth following 2023-24 appears to be on an upward trend, driven by the unusually warm summer this year, which has led to more frequent power disruptions and, consequently, a higher demand for power backup and protection products such as inverters, online UPS, and line-interactive UPS systems.

Microtek has been manufacturing online UPS and line-interactive UPS in its advanced, state-of-the-art facility in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, for several years. This aligns with the government's "Make in India" initiative, with the goal of capturing a significant market share. Additionally, Microtek has expanded its product portfolio to include high-demand 3-phase products.

The PM Surya Uday Scheme is expected to have a multiplier effect on the sales of grid-tied inverters and DC solar panels. Microtek is actively focusing on leveraging this scheme to maximize the growth of its solar product line.

Softdisk's contribution to the power backup industry is unmatched and beyond words. Dr. Sai at Softdisk has consistently taken new initiatives each year to promote companies and brands in this sector. Additionally, Softdisk provides a valuable platform at its annual award function, where top industry leaders come together to exchange ideas and insights. Softdisk has been dedicated to the Indian UPS industry for over three decades. While international reports often highlight multinational UPS companies, Softdisk also emphasizes the recognition of Indian UPS firms. The annual UPS Day organized by Softdisk is a highly anticipated event within the Indian UPS community, as it brings together all Indian UPS companies on a single platform to acknowledge their contributions to the UPS market, exchange insights from industry leaders, and address critical industry issues requiring attention and collaboration.

According to Mr. Rajaram Ramamoorthy, MD Electronics & Controls Pvt, Ltd,. Bangalore, India is a growing market and will continue for the next decade. Economy is expected to keep growing and development will be on all fronts – Manufacturing, Retail, IT, Healthcare, Education etc. Government spending has increased through GEM, however, there are a lot of challenges addressing the GEM market. Since UPS is an essential product for real time businesses, the UPS market is expected to grow consistently.  However, challenges exist for the UPS players as the manpower, raw material and other operating costs are shooting up and has an impact on the profitability of the UPS companies, coupled with intense price competition. With the barrier for entry low, there are numerous UPS suppliers flooding the market with no or less knowledge of the customer requirements and customers chasing the prices. It is mandatory for UPS companies to tread carefully and ride the growth wave. However he adds that customer acquisition is a continuous exercise. With intense competition in the market, retention of customers is a challenge as price forms the most important criteria and there is intense price war. The Three phase UPS System market is growing and there is a good market for those manufacturers producing quality UPS Systems with latest specifications. E&C has been catering to this market requirement, and currently working on coming out with cost effective models without compromising quality and specifications, there by increasing its presence and business in this area.

On the question of Suryodaya Yojna, he believes that every household erecting solar panels to generate electricity and getting subsidy is going to increase the demand for solar panels and solar inverters.

There will be intense competition and lot of new entrants in this space. Customers should exercise due diligence in ensuring that they are erecting quality solar power generating systems that are backed by good service, otherwise the investment and the subsidy will become unproductive, he laments.

Softdisk has been focusing on the Indian UPS Industry for over three decades. While International reports focus on Multinational UPS companies, SD’s focus is on recognizing the Indian UPS Companies as well. SD’s annual UPS Day is an event most looked for by the Indian UPS fraternity as it brings together all the Indian UPS Companies to one platform to recognize their contribution to the UPS market, exchange views and ideas from Industry leaders, and also address industry related issues which need attention and cooperation.

According to Mr. Christo George, MD of Hykon India Limited,Thrissur, the growth is likely to be driven by the rising demand for clean and sustainable energy solutions, supportive government policies, and ongoing technological advancements in renewable energy. As India emerges as one of the world's largest economies, there will be a significant demand for online three-phase UPS systems in various industries. The increasing prevalence of IoT-connected equipment makes industrial machinery more sensitive, leading to a growing preference for  three-phase online UPS solutions that can support entire offices data centers factories, thus eliminating the need for separate UPS units for each piece of equipment.

To meet this demand, Hykon has set-up a new manufacturing facility dedicated to producing higher capacity three-phase online UPS units equipped with lithium battery packs, offering capacities of up to 500 KVA. The new Hykon plant has implemented a state-of-the-art.

bi-directional Solar UPS system equipped with lithium battery packs. This innovative setup allows the entire factory to operate solely on solar energy while simultaneously charging the batteries. Any surplus energy generated during daylight hours is seamlessly integrated into the grid. At night, the factory draws power from the stored energy in the batteries, ensuring uninterrupted operations. This advanced solution is referred to as the  Battery Solar Energy System (BESS).

The Government of India has developed a comprehensive roadmap for the years ahead, that focuses on the widespread deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in both industrial sectors and energy distribution companies. In alignment with this vision, Hykon is establishing a BESS plant in their new factory to showcase this pioneering technology. They envision a future where many industries and institutions become self-sufficient energy producers.

Softdisk has served as a unifying force for well over three decades, bringing all competitors together under one roof each year. The incredible work they do deserves our utmost respect, and we commend Dr. Sai  & his team for consistently achieving this year after year.

According to Mr. S. Sabapathy MD, Micron Systems & Controls Pvt. Ltd. Bangalore, the energy industry in India, whether it involves conventional power or renewable sources like solar, wind, or biomass, has been experiencing steady growth since COVID-19. The past year has been positive, and this trend is expected to continue. He anticipates that the industry could achieve double-digit growth, despite challenges in component procurement, with growth rates projected between 10% and 11.0% for solar.

The "Make in India" initiative has been highly advantageous, leading to an expanded customer base nationwide. Additionally, the shift towards green renewable energy has significantly enhanced their business turnover.

In the upcoming financial year, the company is poised for substantial growth in turnover, contributing to national development through job creation and revenue generation. It is really good as all this synchronizes with our 30th anniversary, he laments.

Softdisk is more than just a magazine, it serves as a business partner for our power industry. The agency provides accurate data that helps us redefine and develop our business strategies in the right direction. As the saying goes, "Data and business go hand in glove" and good business relies on reliable data. We congratulate Softdisk on its achievements for well over 3 decades. Just as our industry may faces challenges, Softdisk remains steadfast and dependable. We wish them all the best for the years ahead and hope they continue this exemplary work for years to come.

Mr. Narayan Sabahahit, MD, Techser Power Solutions Pvt. Ltd. says that  India, with an estimated population of 1.44 billion in 2024, is the most populous country in the world. This, combined with the nation's economic ambition to become a developed nation, creates significant potential demand for power generation, where demand far exceeds supply. This scenario serves as a crucial growth factor for Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) manufacturers. Industry forecasters project growth at approximately 6.5%, which appears to be a pragmatic estimate.

He believes that the 'Make in India' initiative, along with the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) support for deserving sectors, has significantly boosted manufacturing. The increasing number of industries has led to a substantial rise in demand for UPS systems, particularly regenerative UPS units, which can achieve yearly growth rates exceeding 8.5%. As a manufacturer, we aim to capture a fair share of this growing demand. agrees that there is significant demand for three-phase UPS systems, which are gaining momentum. In this segment, modular UPS solutions are becoming increasingly common across various sectors, including BFSI and education.

To capitalize on the "Make in India" initiative, Techser Power Solutions is expanding the capacity of its manufacturing units.

Regarding renewable energy alternatives to conventional UPS systems,  he says Although India's solar energy capacity has increased thirty fold over the last nine years, reaching 87.2 GW as of July 2024, the target for rooftop solar generation was not met by 2023. However, with the launch of the PM Suryodaya Yojana, which aims to install rooftop solar panels on 1 crore households across India, the overall rooftop solar target now appears achievable.

Softdisk has evolved into a highly respected magazine, making significant contributions to the power industry with its well-researched articles and thought-provoking ideas.

According to Mr. Sumanth Kumar, President of UMDA and MD of PNS Systems Pvt. Ltd., any growth around 8% is a positive and welcome sign, especially considering the global economic slowdown.

At PNS Systems, we prioritize manufacturing indigenous products and encourage our clients to support "Make in India" initiatives. While challenges related to cost and competition from imported Chinese-made UPS systems still exist, we promote Made in India UPS systems for the inherent advantages they offer. One of the biggest advantages of Made in India UPS systems is the quick turn-around time for service issues, thanks to the easy and in-house availability of spare parts.

In contrast, Chinese-made UPS systems in India often face challenges such as a lack of spare parts and high annual maintenance costs. Customers are frequently advised to replace their existing UPS systems, leading to significant capital expenditures. To address these issues, we are actively working on upgrading our designs, particularly in the area of magnetics, to reduce costs and size.

On the topic of rooftops and renewable energy, Mr. Sumant Kumar believes that the coming decade will undoubtedly be dominated by renewable energy. He emphasizes that maintaining a healthy environment is a global necessity, and governments around the world are shifting toward non-polluting, renewable energy sources. Solar rooftops are increasingly being adopted in villages and rural areas, thanks in part to state government subsidies aimed at promoting their use. The launch of Suryodaya Yojana has certainly pepped up the reach of Solar to the middle income group and the rural institutions.

Softdisk has been instrumental in bridging the gap between companies and customers in the green energy sector, acting as a crucial connector for the industry. To enhance its presence even further, it can continue to create knowledge-sharing platforms and networking opportunities that foster a cohesive community focused on pure green energy and big data.

Mr. Swarup Paul, MD of Better Power, believes that the industry will experience an overall growth rate of around 10.00 percent, indicating a positive trend. This year Better Power grew by 8.40% and expect to improve on this in 2024-25 fiscal.  To capitalize on this momentum, Better Power is developing marketing campaigns that emphasize the benefits of its UPS systems, particularly in terms of quality, reliability, and localization. We plan to leverage both digital marketing and traditional advertising channels to reach a broader audience. By actively listening to customer feedback and continuously improving our products and services based on their input, we demonstrate our commitment to customer satisfaction and product excellence. In line with market demands, Better Power Services has also begun production of three-phase UPS systems that comply with the Make in India initiative.

Additionally, Better Power Services is aligning with the growing trends in green energy by investing in this sector. Increased investments in renewable energy, whether through foreign direct investment (FDI) or other means, can lead to the development of more renewable energy projects, such as solar and wind farms. Better Power Services is recognized as a key vendor for green energy in Northeast India.

Softdisk stands out as the only source for Indian UPS industry analysis. For greater visibility, an enhanced internet presence is essential for Softdisk. It should position itself as an India-centric UPS analysis resource alongside foreign research reports that typically focus on multinational players.

According to Mr. R.K. Bansal, MD of Uniline Energy Systems has grown by nearly 15 percent, we believe the over all industry growth to be around 10% to 11% for FY 2024-25, it will be out with Softdisk coming out with its survey. We anticipate a strong growth trajectory in the energy systems sector, fueled by technological advancements and a heightened focus on infrastructure development. Uniline Energy is strategically positioned to capitalize on this growth by leveraging its expertise in providing efficient power solutions. Our goal is to make a significant contribution to the industry's expansion while upholding the highest standards of quality and innovation.

The emphasis on three-phase online UPS systems and the "Atma Nirbhar Bharat" initiative is indeed promising. Lamenting on Softdisk Rajesh says, our relation with Softdisk started right from the beginning, which is now over 3 decades old. Being one of the most unorganized sectors, those days, Softdisk, has predominantly contributed to find out and analyze the size of the market. We recall the time invested by the Softdisk team to understand our kind of business over the years.  Softdisk plays a major part in the industry with its novel ideas of product introduction, data collection and analysis. Success stories in industries are emerging from the degree to which companies embrace the implementation of updated technologies in their processes. SD’s contribution to sharing knowledge in this area deserves all the praise.

CONCLUSION : Companies should be ready to target potentially high-growth segments with the right quality products to maximize benefits. Strong service support and effective market penetration will be crucial, As some may struggle to keep pace. Softdisk urges manufacturers not to undercut prices in an attempt to increase top-line. revenue but to concentrate on profitability by enhancing the bottom line.
